Homemade Apple Pie Spice

Fall is about ALL those amazing smells, sounds and feelings. It’s about Apple Picking, Pumpkin Patch visits, Windy Days and warm desserts.

Going from #BoxedtoBasics with spices is really kind of easy … I’m serious. Here is how I did it.

Step 1: I had a junk Apple Pie Spice, you know those little plastic round containers with a red lid? When it was almost gone …

Step 2: I bought an Organic Apple Pie Spice. Simple, better ingredients, but a bit pricey. When it was close to empty …

Step 3: I made my own and poured my Homemade Version into the “glass” Organic container. YES, I labeled it with masking tape, as I always do!

Step 4: Bye, Bye OLD bottle and hello little Ball Mason Jar! Sooo stinkin’ cute!

Oops!

Step 5: When you decide to double the recipe, cuz’ well … it’s Apple Season … you switch to a bigger jar. No worries, just peal off the old label and put on the bigger jar!

You can use Apple Pie Spice in: apple pie, leftover oatmeal applesauce muffins, cupcakes, cookies, cobblers, crumbles or in your morning oatmeal or smoothie!

I’ve included links to make it a bit easier to gather ingredients. Also, for some spices that you don’t use a lot of (yet!), I picked a small volume of spice … we use A LOT of Cinnamon in our house!

Homemade Apple Pie Spice Recipe

Ingredients: (this makes 1/4 cup)

  • 3 TBSP ground cinnamon (https://amzn.to/3CZhgwy)
  • 3 TBSP nutmeg (https://amzn.to/3c8sC5T)
  • 1-1/2 tsp cardamom (https://amzn.to/303cFvn)
  • 1-1/2 tsp allspice (https://amzn.to/3BYGtWy)
  • 1 small 4-oz glass jar (I love the Ball short quilted one! Here: https://amzn.to/3bURfTc)

Instructions:

Combine all the spices listed in a bowl and mix well. Don’t forget to take a “sniff-sniff”. Doesn’t that smell amazing?! You can decide if you want more or less of a specific spice. Just remember to keep a spiral notebook or binder with all your Homemade Recipes.

Tip: I NEED to inventory all my spices and restock, but I just don’t have time. I decided to use some green tape, laying around the house, to mark those spices that I know I have purchased extras of. Then, I’ll buy as I go, fill up the old jars as needed and mark with green tape, and add the extras to my “Spice” stash.  In a few months, I’ll be stocked up and feel better.

P.S. The Best Part … once you start buying Spices in bulk, you have already started your Preparedness “Spice” stash.

P.S.S. That really cute Apple Mug is available from our sister company, here: https://awkwardchickenoutfitters.com/products/apple-mug
